From West Indian flamingoes to herons and more, there’s a varied and vibrant world of bird watching in the Turks and Caicos waiting to be discovered by birding enthusiasts.
You’re bound to come across several beautiful birds, both local and migratory, without having to look too far—it’s not unusual to spot ospreys, green herons, mockingbirds, the Bahama Woodstar hummingbird and so much more right here at The Strand on Cooper Jack Bay. But if you want to get more serious with your bird watching, here are a few of our favorite spots for catching a glimpse of our avian wonders.
Frenchman’s Creek and Pigeon’s Pond
A protected area on Providenciales, Frenchman’s Creek offers a haven for bird enthusiasts seeking serenity and a wide variety of birdlife. Explore the mangrove-fringed waterways and witness the graceful flights of herons and egrets. This wetland area provides a tranquil haven for avian residents and presents an opportunity to spot various local and migratory species, among them American kestrels, bananaquits, mockingbirds, herons, egrets and more.
Wheeland Ponds
Located in the settlement of Blues Hills, Wheeland Ponds boast an impressive array of bird species. Reaching depths of up to 6 feet—deeper than most ponds found on the island—Wheeland Ponds attract waterfowl, pelicans, cormorants and more. Keep your binoculars ready to spot the black-necked stilt, white-cheeked pintail, green heron and little blue heron, to name a few—all while listening to the unique song of the northern mockingbird.
Provo Golf Course
The award-winning Provo Golf Course will get more than just golfers excited—it’s also a bird watcher’s delight, with its ponds serving as a haven for a variety of birdlife. As you explore the picturesque course, be on the lookout for Reddish Egrets, a rare species found abundantly in the Turks and Caicos. You’re also likely to spot a variety of herons and waterfowl, as well as migratory birds in the winter months such as the West Indian flamingo, as they seek respite in the course’s peaceful ponds.
Bird Rock Trail
Found on the southeastern side of the island, Bird Rock Trail is a newer trail established by the Turks and Caicos National Trust that takes visitors on a scenic walk through dry forest, wetlands and low-lying coastal cliffs. Here, you might spot some of the island’s more common species, such as brown pelicans, green herons, bananaquits and more. Of course, not every visit guarantees plentiful sightings, but the trail still promises a pleasant stroll in a peaceful setting.
